Okay, so in the last post, I introduced you to Zombies. Well, more succinctly, I described the eating habits of Zombies. I know to some the description was overkill but it was done so for a good reason.
How can we consider ourselves among the living when we are incapable of making nutritional decisions that could enhance the quality of life and improve our overall well-being? How can we ask children to do the “right” things when we can’t even do the simple right things such as loving and taking care of ourselves?
Each and every day parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, mentors, coaches alike extol the virtues of “doing the right thing” to children. We expect kids to do the simple things right if not all the time, the majority of the time. We expect them to keep their room clean, not to text while driving, avoid the use of drugs and alcohol, be respectful to others, do their best in the classroom, etc.
However as adults, the majority of us cannot do the simple things correctly like eat food that has been shown to both prolong our life and increase the likelihood of having good health so that we may be able to enjoy life on this earth with our children and loved ones for as long as possible.
Others of us cannot seem to avoid the consumption of cigarettes and other drugs that undoubtedly shorten our lives and reduce the quality of those lives. Nevertheless, out of the same mouth that sucks down ounce after ounce of the sugary, acidic, artificial drink; eats pounds upon pounds of animal flesh, artery clogging, heart stopping, diabetic causing food; and that puffs on a cancer causing toxic tube numerous times a day, we ask children to exercise more discipline than we are willing to demonstrate.
The irony is that you, I and we (the Zombies) expect our offspring not to be Zombies – human beings incapable of making decisions that could enhance the quality of life and improve their condition.
At the end of part I of this post, I asked the rhetorical question, “Have you seen a Zombie recently”? The answer is undoubtedly and absolutely yes! Yes, you have seen a Zombie because you, I and we are the Zombies. We, the adults, are the ones who continuously behave as if we are brainless – routinely functioning as though we are incapable of making decisions that could enhance the quality of life and improve our (human) condition.
A Zombie Shall Be Known by the Offspring That it Bears
Do you ever wonder why childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions? Watch the parents/adults eat. Not long ago, I had lunch with a school Superintendent who is not only responsible for the education of tens of thousands of children but who is also responsible for livelihood of thousands of employees.
During lunch, the Supt. disclosed that they were diabetic and took insulin daily. Imagine my surprise when the food that they ordered was loaded with high carbohydrates, excessive fat, absurd amounts of cholesterol and an overindulgence of sugars. As if the supersized plate of pasta with shrimp and white sauce was not enough; they ordered a chocolate brownie and ice cream for dessert.
This lunch was evidence that not only did this person show an inability to make a decision that could enhance the quality of their life and improve their Type 2 diabetic condition but they showed a blatant disregard for the growing cost of healthcare in the School District. When asked how they were able to eat this way, they responded by saying that they took their insulin (expensive drug) shot before arriving.
When our educational leaders show a clear inability to make a decision that could enhance the quality of their life and improve their District’s economic conditions that educational leader shows the characteristics of a Zombie. Why then should we expect the children that the Supt. is are charged with educating to behave any way other than narcissistically having a patent disregard for the greater societal good?
Ever wonder why kids bully one another and lack civility? Watch the interaction among parents/adults. Representatives Doug Lamborn and Joe Wilson are the poster children for bullying and a lacking civility. Representatives Doug Lamborn and Joe Wilson both U.S. elected officials found it acceptable to refer to the President as a “tar baby” and a “liar”.
No matter what your political affiliation, when did it ever become acceptable for an elected official to engage in unwanted, aggressive behavior towards a sitting President? Don’t know the answer; neither do I. However, Representatives Doug Lamborn and Joe Wilson found this type of name calling to be appropriate when referencing the leader of the “Free World”.
When our political leaders show an inability to follow clearly defined rules for behavior and respectfully monitor their interactions with the President, these political leaders show the characteristics of Zombies. Why then should we expect the children of our country, the future leaders, to behave as anything other than miniature bullying Zombie when our elected officials serve as such great role models?

There are so many more instances where we exhibit Zombie like symptoms and behavior such as when we spend money we do not have and become slaves to credit; try to keep up with the Joneses who themselves are lost, dazed and confused; and drive while manipulating (texting, instant messaging, emailing, photo taking, D-Jaying, etc.) our “smart” phones.
For now, I will spare you anymore examples as I believe without having to look in a mirror you know who the Zombies are, where you can find the Zombies and you should even have a good idea about whether or not you are close to becoming a Zombie, in the unlikely event that you are not already one.
All that said, try to wake up, stay awake and keep your eyes alert. There are Zombies in your midst. You do not want to run across a most infected Zombie without knowing what Zombies want and why they exist.
